It’s simultaneously: cool, revolting, hilarious, disastrous, pretentious, beautiful, sad, hopeful, lame, thoughtful, and stupid.  Find true love here.

A Grand Slam from the Onion →
The Onion is probably under-appreciated at this point, right? Has anything been so consistently great for so long? Even when it’s not at its best, it’s still rock-solid. But when it’s right on, there are few people/outlets capable of such spectacular comedic grand slams.

Interesting profile of Michael Vick →
Love him, hate him, or don’t care about him (sign me up for option #3), it’s a fascinating situation and comeback and (continuing) story.  Will Leitch does a nice job of inserting himself just enough and reporting what he sees and feels on top of what his subject says.  On the other hand, one could probably make a pretty good case for overreaching…

A thoughtful piece about Groupon's troubles →
Except that nobody calls them “troubles” and there is so little critical press about Groupon that you’d think they were curing cancer.  Blows my mind.

I have no axe to grind; I just feel like there’s some real excessive exuberance out there right now.

More reasons to like The National →
Everything about this is soooo 2011: commissioning an original track from a popular band for a video game, a crowdsourced video contest, picking winners and interacting with fans directly. The best part: I like the song.

Since 1992, the I.R.S. has compiled data from the returns of the 400 Americans reporting the largest income. In 1992, the top 400 had aggregate taxable income of $16.9 billion and paid federal taxes of 29.2 percent on that sum. In 2008, the aggregate income of the highest 400 had soared to $90.9 billion — a staggering $227.4 million on average — but the rate paid had fallen to 21.5...

I hope Pres Obama reads this and gets some fire back.  My fav quote from this piece: The most charitable explanation is that he and his advisers have succumbed to a view of electoral success to which many Democrats succumb — that “centrist” voters like “centrist” politicians. Unfortunately, reality is more complicated. Centrist voters prefer honest politicians who help them solve their...

Compare with my humbly submitted counterpoint.  I’m not the writer Tom LeClair is, nor is my groupblog the New York Times…but it’s safe to say that those small hesitations LeClair had with the novel were full-blown, festering, infuriating problems for me.

Rob Delaney: Bought some US stocks →
laurenashleybishop: robdelaney: I just bought some shares in an index fund that tracks the Wilshire 5000, which means I just bought shares in the 5000 largest American companies. I did this because I wish to take substantive action against Standard & Poor’s downgrade of US credit. Standard & Poor’s, and to a lesser degree, Fitch… i wish i was half as smart as rob delaney. i wish...

The Sad, Bizarre Murder of Robert Wone →
When you know many of the “characters” in a “true crime” story, it’s unfortunately a lot sadder than it is entertaining. for further reading: part 1 http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/05/31/AR2009053102510.html part 2 http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/06/01/AR2009060103472.html?sid=ST2009053102566 for obsessives:...
